Workshop Objectives
Each victim of gender-based violence represents an emergency, a cry for help that medical practitioners should hear and respond to with maximum professionalism. In this workshop, together with our guests, we take a look at how forensic doctors and doctors of other specialties interact with victims of various forms of violence and sexual abuse in Poland and Romania.
Forensic doctors are among the first-line professionals called to manage a major social problem represented by gender-based violence, which takes on the most diverse forms of manifestation and generates many victims, especially among women. The phenomenon is increasing, being favoured in recent years by crisis situations such as the pandemic, and more recently by the war near Romania's and Poland’s borders, which was accompanied by episodes of uncontrolled migration. Another signal indicating sexual abuses, albeit indirect, is the high rate of pregnancies and births in teenage girls, Romania being the top EU country reporting this phenomenon, as well as record numbers of trafficking of people. From the perspective of the statistical numbers, the response of medical practitioners and forensic doctors becomes critical and therefore the question arises to what extent they are prepared to face the challenges that gender-based violence represents. All the more so as.
We will analyse the opportunity of introducing in the medical students' university curriculum a teaching module on Gender-based Violence, so that the future medical practitioners will be well prepared to face these complex problems. We will also discuss how current practices can be adapted to the new legislative requirements at the national level, as well as to international good practice guidelines. The WHO Country Office in Romania is launching the invitation to strengthen the Romanian national health system’s response to violence against women and girls that experience sexual and other forms of violence, including trafficking for sexual exploitation.
